After a full season of introspection, I decided that I needed to make space in my life for some new creative energy. I booked another Peerspace, this time in my neighborhood and photographed three different performance artists. Two singer-songwriters and one actor. Below are some of my favorite shots from the sessions.

Last January, I was introduced to Treble.fm by my friend Alisha Roney, who is in the band Cherubim (fka Feathers + Eyes). Her band was performing at the first showcase (pre-launch) and I wanted to check them out. I was also trying to excite the music photographer I used to be, so I showed up dolo with my camera in tow. 

I left the event completely energized by the people that I had met, but also by the music that I had heard. At that point in my New York existence, I was 4 years in and hadn't felt the music-community vibe since I left Seattle. It was hella revitalizing. The Treble.fm app launched this past August – it is a mobile interface that allows for you to connect with creatives all over the world. The idea sounds grandiose but in action, it's really quite simple. Let's say you are a singer who is looking for a songwriter or a drummer who is looking to pick up a couple of gigs with a band; you can post something specific on the bulletin board or you can use the app to search for potential opportunities. These opportunities are visible to all users but are also segmented into categories depending on the subject. 

Mid-September, I posted a listing. I was looking to update my site with some new faces and offered sessions to creatives free of charge. After I drummed up enough interest, I booked a photo studio with Peerspace and gave 30 minutes to whoever responded to the listing with their e-mail address. There was no pre-screening process, I wanted to go into this blind to see who I would meet.

Out of the five that confirmed, three came thru for their session. Mike Vivanco, Goods Wrapper, and Melody Sohayegh. Though each person was photographed in the same spaces in the studio, they naturally brought their own vibe. It was a challenge to try and capture the essence of each person who I had met maybe 3 or 5 minutes before, but in the end, I am happy with what I shot. Below are some of my favorites.

Overall the experience was super gratifying; I got to connect with new artists and got some great photos. I would for sure do it again! Perhaps sooner than later.

Of course, this post is fashionably-late, but it took me a few days (and hours of sleep) to decompress post-NYFW. Below is one of the images that I took for The Haute Pursuit while she was in town for fashion week. 

 I spent 6 days in the company of Vanessa Hong aka The Haute Pursuit, who is the owner and creator of THPSHOP. 

She is easily one of the most woke humans I’ve encountered as of late. Of course practices yoga, mediates twice a day, eats super healthy (she put me on game about activated foods and now I know what my ayurvedic dosha is!) and has tons of knowledge regarding what is going on in the world on an environmental tip. 

Six months ago, she closed her store to re-think the materials and physical use of the items she was selling. While her life may seem super glamorous on Instagram, Vanessa spends lots of time thinking about how to make a fashion more sustainable and how she can help protect our earth. If you’re not already, follow her on IG and keep up with her journey.

A few weeks ago, my dear friend Bobbie, co-owner of Bahtoh connected me with the lovely Vanessa, who is the powerhouse who is and runs The Haute Pursuit and soon after my first experience with New York Fashion Week began.

I’ll start by saying that I don’t consider myself to be an exceptionally fashionable person. 

When I moved to New York in 2012, I was in this phase of wearing only black and white and have since shifted towards wearing all black, with the occasional shades of grey and blue for variety. My go-to outfit is a ripped pair of black Levis jeans with a white or black oversized t-shirt depending on the pair of Vans I want to wear that day.

Rolling with Vanessa to and from fittings was an illuminating experience; listening to her talk shop with the designers about the current state of fashion and also the impact that fashion has on the world was very intriguing. I mean, I follow my fair share of designers and brands on Instagram, but don’t claim to know much about the fashion world outside of my personal opinion on how something looks. I don’t know the history of all that is fashion, but know that most if not all fashion is referential, so hearing these conversations live and in real time was enlightening.

Closer to the weekend, Vanessa’s schedule was packed with fashion shows. I didn’t go inside any of the shows – my main role was to assist Vanessa with her schedule and to help generate visual content for her Instagram, but I did witness the onslaught of paparazzi in real life, which was just as stressful as it seems on TV. I also got to scope out the camera slinging street-style photographers who, like myself, were also dressed in all black.

Every August for the past 3 years, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Quinn and her family. This year, Quinn turned 3 and unfortunately, I missed her party due to my own birthday celebrations (I turned 30 and spent the weekend in Montauk) but I made sure to come back early enough to photograph her family the Sunday after the festivities.

Being an end-of-summer-child myself, I will say there is something magical about this time of year. The weather is generally not as unbearable as it is in July and early August and most, if not all of your friends have returned from vacation due to all that is the dreaded academic calendar. 

Documenting Quinn’s life has been a privilege and bearing witness to the magnificent connection that she and her parents have makes my heart grow three times big, every time. I get especially sentimental when seeing how Quinn and her mother relate; it makes me think about my mother and how much I miss her.

As summer is slowly but surely ending and fall vibes undoubtedly upon us, I wanted to take this time to mention that I am available for family portrait sessions in Prospect Park on select weekends this month and in October.
